Calling all greek families

Birthdays are a special time, when people come together in celebration of a life.

And what better way to document those memories than to take photographs that will last a lifetime.

In the spirit of celebrating its 40th birthday, the St Athanasios Greek Orthodox Church, in Benoni, is calling all Greek families and people of Greek descent to bring along photos of their families that they would like published in the church magazine, to commemorate the Greek community.

Bringing families together and leaving a mark on the community is the main aim of the magazine, and reminding future generations of the path that was taken by the founders of the church and keeping up with the customs and traditions of the church in modern society.

”The Greek community always works together in everything we do; we are a close-knit, family-orientated church and community and we try to instil that in the younger generations,” said Margeret Pappas, who is the church secretary.

With a history that dates back to 1950 under the chairmanship of Arthur Polas, there have been a host of weddings, baptisms and annual events that form part of the foundation of the church.

A formal dinner will be held to celebrate this milestone.

The date and venue will be confirmed at a later stage.

For more information, call Pappas on 079 516 6790 or 011 422 4509, or Father Marco Theodosi on 072 726 3445.
