“Violence is never the answer to any problem, especially gang-related violence, which is a cancer that eats into the community, claiming many lives in process,” he said.
“Although the community is commended for taking a stance against gangsterism in Daveyton, it is regrettable that some have actually gone further, to take the law into their own hands.”
Gungubele said he encourages community members to place their trust in the police, and their ability to take action against criminals.
Three teenagers, two of them twin brothers, were killed when tyres were placed around their necks and set alight.
Four alleged gang members have been arrested since Monday.
Gungubele is concerned that learning was disrupted, because some learners were to scared to go to school for fear of being victimised and attacked by gang members.
“This cannot be allowed at this crucial time of the academic year,” he said.
The mayor has called on the SAPS, EMPD, leaders of civil society and the community to work closely together in dealing with all acts of lawlessness.
“Let us stop the mob justice and have faith in our police to do their work,” he said.
