Explosives found in shack

An unknown quantity of explosives was found in a shack in the Lindelani informal settlement on Tuesday, February 2.

A woman (36) and two men, aged 30 and 48, were arrested at around 1pm.

At the time of publication, EMPD spokesperson Lieut Col Wilfred Kgasago said the explosives were assumed to be commercial, though their exact nature and purpose were unconfirmed.

“Commercial and industrial explosives are used for applications other than military,” explained Kgasago.

He said more operations looking for illegal explosives would follow soon.

“It was a joint operation comprising EMPD and SAPS members.”

The suspects were taken to the Benoni Police Station and charged with illegal possession of explosives.

They are expected to appear in the Benoni Magistrates Court soon.
