Five-day long drought ends

The water supply returned to four Benoni suburbs on Tuesday, after they were left dry for almost five days.

Water flow to Cloverdene, Van Ryn Small Holdings and Crystal Park was cut on March 3, to allow for the repair of an 800mm main supply pipe, and returned early on Tuesday morning.

Although repairing of the pipe in Van Ryn Small Holdings was expected to last a few hours, water pressure remained low or non-existent for most of the weekend, as the wrong size clamps for the pipe were received.

According to Clr Stefanie Kruger (Ward 24), the pipe was repaired at around midnight on Monday (March 7), but another leak appeared the next day.

She said it was being attended to and did not expect further drops in water pressure.

“There is water everywhere, but no one is working here,” Andries Strydom, a Cloverdene resident said while he was at the site on Tuesday.

A Crystal Park resident, who wished to remain anonymous, said water meters in the area kept running on March 7, despite the water supply being off.

He suspected it was due to air in the pipes.

Louise Kruger, a Morehill resident, was relieved that there was water on Tuesday, but expressed another concern.

“With the water being off for so long, what’s happening at the sewage farm here (Morehill)?” she asked.

Morehill residents reported the same cut in their water supply, last week, though Themba Gadebe, the Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipality (EMM) spokesperson, mentioned only Crystal Park and Cloverdene.

At the weekend, Gadebe said water tankers were deployed to affected areas, though several residents disputed this on Facebook.

EMM was approached for new comment on March 8, but none had been received at the time of publication.
