This warning comes after a few incidents employing this modus operandi were brought to the attention of police.
WO Ramothakhi Maqabe, Actonville SAPS spokesperson, said two families were scammed by this man on March 27.
“It is alleged that the man poses as a police officer from the SAPS provincial office,” he added.
“He calls the station every morning and asks how many suspects have been arrested the day before.”
Maqabe said the man then asks for all the details and contact details of the family members.
“After getting the information, he calls the families and asks them for bail money,” Maqabe added.
“The suspect then asks the families to deposit the money at any money market or at the bank.”
Maqabe added that one complainant became suspicious after depositing the money and alerted the police.
A case of fraud has been opened at the Actonville Police Station.
No arrests have been made, but police are investigating.
Maqabe urged community members not to pay any bail money to any bank account or through a money market.
“If you want to bail someone out come to the station and we will gladly assist you,” he said.
If anyone receives a suspicious phone call or has been a victim of this scam, call the station on 011 964 6000.
