Good samaritans turn out to be thieves

Four men who came to the aid of an elderly woman turned out to be thieves.

At around 10.25am on Tuesday (May 10) morning, a 71-year-old woman made her way to the Benoni CBD when she experienced car trouble on Dalrymple Street, in Northmead.

Marie Maritz recalls four men approaching her to offer their assistance.

According to Maritz, two of the guys proceeded to push the car, while the other two got inside in an attempt to push start it.

To thank them for their efforts, the Rynfield resident gave each of them R10.

When they left on foot, she discovered that they took her bag which contained valuables and about R2 000 in cash.

“I’m ok, I’ve been robbed before,” said Maritz.
According to Benoni SAPS spokesperson Const Zunickha Essakjee, a case of theft out of a motor vehicle was opened at the Benoni Police Station.
Essakjee could not confirm the amount of money that was taken.
No arrests were made.
