Roadblock yields arrests
Nine men were arrested for being in possession of commercial explosives and buckets of gold dust following a roadblock, on Apex Road, on May 8.
The EMPD and police conducted the operation.
EMPD spokesperson Lieut-Col Wilfred Kgasago said the men were travelling in a Nissan bakkie when police stopped and searched their vehicle.
“Police found three commercial explosive with cords used in detonating them and a bucket full of gold dust,” said Kgasago.
“The men were also found to be illegal immigrants.”
Kgasago added that the roadblock was a general crime prevention initiative with the particular objective of apprehending those involved in illegal mining activities in the area.
The men, aged between 18 and 47, were detained at the Benoni Police Station and were expected to appear in the Benoni Magistrate’s Court.
