Protest erupts in Wattville

Residents of the Harry Gwala informal settlement, in Wattville, took to the streets last night (May 17) and today in a bid to force Eskom to install electrical connections in the area.

Streets were strewn with burning tyres, concrete and stones so that no vehicles could move along the streets.

The protesters were also reportedly stopping residents from going to school and work.

The South African Police Service (SAPS) were on the scene to disperse and control the crowd.

Actonville SAPS spokesperson WO Ramothakhi Maqabe said no damages have been caused to any buildings, no injuries were reported and no arrests were made.

“We urge residents to avoid Dube Street and the R23 leading into Dube Street,” said Maqabe.
