The arrest was made at around 1.30am, on Tuesday (May 17), on the N12, in Alberton.
According to Lieut-Col Wilfred Kgasago, EMPD spokesperson, the two occupants of the truck claimed they were en route to Johannesburg to pick up a cargo of groceries when the truck ran out of diesel.
“The freeway officer smelled a rat and followed his instinct and enquired about the truck,” said Kgasago.
“It emerged that the Scania horse-and-trailer was a stolen truck – stolen in July 2015 in Benoni (Ampthill Avenue).”
The two male occupants were arrested and the truck was towed to the Benoni SAPS’s Van Ryn Deep Pound.
The 27-year-old driver and his 25-year-old passenger were charged with possession of a stolen motor vehicle at the Benoni Police Station.
They were expected to appear in the Benoni Magistrate’s Court on May 18.
