Benoni Country Club seeks legal advice as new public participation meeting date is set

The executive committee of the Benoni Country Club (BCC) is seeking legal advice and is again calling for big support from the community.

This follows the placement of an official notice by the Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipality (EMM), of the rescheduled public participation meeting regarding the proposed development of the land on which the BCC is situated, in this week’s Benoni City Times.

An advertisement placed by the metro on page 6 of the newspaper, which hit the streets yesterday (Thursday, October 20), called on the public to: “Have your say on the proposed development of public properties – or portions thereof – that are being made available by the municipality.”

The date of the meeting has been set for Tuesday, November 22, at 7pm, in the main hall at BCC.

Comments and recommendations on the possible sale or lease of the property must be in writing, and sent to the official, James Geldart (Benoni Customer Care Centre), by Thursday, December 1.

The initial public participation meeting was scheduled for August 17, but was, according to metro spokesman Themba Gadebe, postponed until the new council was constituted.

With regards to the notice, BCC CEO Darren Millington said: “Although the club has submitted written and online petitions, council seems disinterested in the views of the community.

“This item remains high on the council’s, or rather someone’s agenda, to dispose of this valuable asset of Benoni.

“It is with this in mind that we again ask for the community’s support in stopping these proposed developments, which will destroy the environment that has been part of our heritage for the past 110 years.

“The club is seeking legal advice on the matter, which will be communicated through the local press soon.

“We invite everyone to come down to the meeting and to voice your concerns over another development in Benoni.

“Copies of the report, submitted by the Ekurhuleni-contracted Deloitte, which clearly shows the lack of bulk services in the area, are available from the club.

“Please feel free to contact us by emailing to darren@benonicc.co.za for any further information.”

The City Times, on Wednesday, October 19, requested detailed comment from the metro pertaining to a number of concerns around the BCC development issue.
