Maj-Gen Poobalan Subbiah, Ekurhuleni Central Cluster commander, said the incident happened between 1am and 1.30am, after about two people entered the home through a window.
“The husband woke up and found that his wife was being raped in the same bed,” said Subbiah, saying the couple were tied up.
“He tried to defend himself and they stabbed him and strangled him.
“He died next to the bed.”

They were in possession of saddles.
He said police suspect these two men were transporting those responsible for the murder and rape.
The female victim, who cannot be identified, is in a critical condition in hospital, saying she was also stabbed.
A case of murder, rape and house robbery has been opened.
