#2026Localelections: Northmead couple tick their boxes

"You cannot complain if you do not vote."

“Exercise your right to vote.”

These were the sentiments shared by Northmead residents Paul and Laura Kennedy who cast their ballots at John Barrable Hall on Monday (November 2), during the special voting period for the 2026 Local Government Elections.

Voters registered for special votes could visit their voting station on Monday and Tuesday, while the general voting took place yesterday (November 4).

It was smooth sailing, the couple told Benoni City Times as they experienced no long queues when they made their marks.

“It was a really good experience. The staff were friendly and the process was smooth and simple.

“I hope a good coalition can take charge of the City of Ekurhuleni. Ünfortunately, service delivery is not great. There is even a road I avoid because of a trench that could damage my tyres,” Paul said.

He has been voting since he became eligible and encouraged others to make use of their right to vote.

“If you don’t vote, a portion of your vote goes to someone else. You need to exercise your right to vote. There are many countries where people don’t have the privilege of voting and are simply being told what to do.”

Laura echoed her husband’s sentiments, adding that people who don’t vote cannot complain about the outcome.
