Make a fireworks plan for your pets
The Benoni SPCA has provided tips for residents to help them minimise harm caused to their pets from loud fireworks during New Year’s celebrations.

• Make sure your dog gets plenty of exercise earlier in the day.
• Keep your dogs inside during firework displays, preferably with human companionship. If it’s hot, cool them down with an air-con or fan.
• Provide a safe place inside for your dogs to retreat. When scared of sounds they can’t orientate or identify, dogs often prefer small enclosed areas.
• If possible, keep the windows and curtains closed. Removing visual stimulation, can calm them.
• Make sure all your dogs wear ID tags on a collar that fits.
• Leave your dog something fun to do. Chewing toys and treats should keep them busy.
• Soft music reduces canine anxiety and has been successfully utilised by dog lovers world-wide.
• Sedatives will calm your pets.
“Anyone who finds a stray animal during the festive season, is asked to drop it off at the Benoni SPCA, so that owners can claim pets from us,” said Benoni SPCA manager Vicky Finnemore.
The Benoni SPCA, situated at 3 Klein Street, will be closed after noon on December 23 and 30 and on public holidays, but their after hour emergency number is 082 526 2974.
