Learn to protect yourself

The Impessa Girl Guides and Wordsworth Rangers held a talk on January 27 with the Grade Eight to 12 learners from Willowmoore and Wordsworth high schools.

The talk was held at Willowmoore High School.

Led by Sharol Naidoo, ambassador for sexual gender-based violence and United States Agency for International Development (USAID), the learners were taught the importance of protecting themselves and speaking up about problems that affect them.

Some of the topics covered included HIV/Aids and other sexually transmitted diseases and the effects they might have on one’s body should they not be treated in the correct manner.

Naidoo encouraged the girls to always protect themselves against sexual predators and abuse from peers.

She urged the girls to become the voice for those who were too afraid to speak out.

Naidoo mentioned iThemba Rape and Trauma Support Centre as one of the centres where girls could go to seek help.

The learners left the talk with some insight into the reality of cases related to gender-based violence against women.
