Ekurhuleni Central Cluster spokesperson Const Zunickha Essakjee said that, upon further investigation by Det-Const Nhlanhla Hlophe, it was believed that the man was lying – as he kept on changing his story.
“The man was immediately arrested,” said Essakjee.
He appeared in the Benoni Magistrate’s Court on March 1.
The Benoni SAPS is issuing a stern warning to the public against reporting false cases.
“People must know that we have competent and intelligent detectives who will leave no stone unturned during their investigation,” the spokesperson said.
“A case of perjury will be registered against any person opening a false case and they will be arrested, as this is a waste of resources as well as time that would have been utilised for investigating serious cases.”
