The Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipality (EMM) initially said May 1 was the deadline for people to have collected their 240l wheelie bins.
This would have signalled the official switch to the waste department collecting only waste placed in the 240l wheelie bins.
The metro then extended the deadline indefinitely, saying they would have another roll-out of bins in Benoni.
This extension would also have meant that all waste (regardless of whether it was in a bin) would be collected until another cut-off date was given.
However, since the start of May, people from various Benoni suburbs complained that waste that was not placed in the receptacles was not collected, apparently due to a communication breakdown in the metro from senior officials to workers on the ground.
When asked about the status of the collection on Monday morning, Ward 23 councillor André du Plessis said: “I was given an undertaking that the department would work the whole weekend to catch up as much as possible.”
Ward 27 councillor Jacques Meiring said refuse (regardless of whether it was in a wheelie bin) was being collected in Northmead on Monday (May 8), despite Friday being the collection day for the suburb.
“They were suppose to collect on Saturday, but nobody can tell me why that did not happen,” said Meiring.
Meiring said areas which were due to be collected on certain days would not be affected by the metro’s catch-up collections.
The EMM had not reply to questions at the time of going to print.
