Blood service thanks blood drive controllers

The South African National Blood Service (SANBS) held its annual Clinic Controller Dinner Evening, at the Benoni Country Club, on June 9.

The event is organised annually to thank the organisations, schools, malls and businesses that act as controllers of blood drives.

Monique Schreiner, head of blood donor relations, emphasised the importance of the role played by the blood donation controllers in bringing in the necessary amount of blood for the SANBS.

Schreiner said the SANBS wants to obtain and retain donors, as only 11 per cent of donors are returning donors.

Chantelle Lamprecht was the guest speaker at the dinner.

Lamprecht was diagnosed with bone cancer in March 2016 and received her first platelets in March 2017.

She thanked the controllers for the blood and platelets they help to bring in, and encouraged the community to give blood, as it makes a difference.

The overall awards recipients for the evening were:

• Best supporting hospital: Pholosong Hospital in Tsakane

• Best supporting school: Hoërskool Die Anker

• Most improved secondary school: Springs Secondary School

• Best shopping centre: Tsakane Mall

• Best supporting business: Ram Hand to Hand Couriers

• Most impressive new business: Hammond Pole Attorneys

• Most improved business: T W Profile

• Best supporting organisation: Rotary Club of Benoni Aurora.
