Rotary Van Ryn welcomes new presidents
The Rotary Club of Benoni Van Ryn recently held its annual induction meeting and awards evening.
Yvonne Holmes was inducted as the club’s new president, while Gill Davey is the club’s new Rotary Anns president.
Holmes, who has been with the club for 10 years, said they will focus on improving child literacy in the community this year.
“We also help provide the lenses and instruments for cataract surgery,” she said.
“Another project will aim to provide water to communities without an adequate supply, through Hippo rollers.”
Davey is one of the charter members of the Rotary Club of Benoni Van Ryn.
“I’m very happy to be the new Rotary Ann president,” she said.
“I’ve been a member of Rotary for 45 years, so I know Benoni and the club well.”
Davey said she wants to do more for Benoni people this year, especially the elderly.
Two Paul Harris Fellowship awards, the highest recognition given by Rotary clubs, were given to Christine Drake and Madeline Kruger at the event.
Drake was acknowledged, primarily, for almost 30 years of teaching sewing at the Northfield Methodist Church, as well as for her ongoing support of the club’s Rotary Anns.
Kruger, otherwise known as “Mother Christmas”, was awarded for decorating her home in Northmead every year, for the enjoyment of the public.
She also answers children’s letters to Santa every year.
