Help your pets during fireworks

As we approach Deepavali among other upcoming holidays where fireworks are released, the Benoni SPCA provided a few tips for pet owners to keep their pets safe during these seasons.

Preparing pets for fireworks:

•Ensure dogs get plenty of exercise and plays a few games during the day

•Play a lot of games with your cat

•Keep pets indoors when thunder or fireworks are expected

•Ensure all windows and doors are closed tightly, close curtains to block flashing lights and sounds

•Give them toys, treats and other distractions to keep them occupied

•A family member or someone who the pet is familiar with should stay at home during the firework display or thunderstorms

•Make sure your pet is micro-chipped or tagged on the collar for easy identification

•Discuss with your vet about supplements or medication for managing anxiety caused by loud noises

How to keep an anxious or scared pet calm during noise:

•Feed the animals well before things are predicted to start

•Switch on the television or music to muffle the sound, but not too loud

•Do not fuss or get over emotional with or punish your pets if they become agitated with the sound; doing so encourages the behaviour and it can become worse

•Carry on the evening as if all is normal and ignore the fearful behaviour unless it is hazardous to the animal

•Give your animals a safe and secure place (preferably indoors) so the pet cannot escape from your property if startled by loud noises

•If animals want to hide in your cupboards, allow them to, a linen or clothes cupboard works well

•If a pet runs to any corner or under the bed to hide, allow them to and wait for them to come out when they feel safer

•Ensure that the owner and members in the house remain calm and stress-free so pets do not mirror the fear

•Harming an animal with fireworks is a criminal offence, contact the local SPCA on the 24-hour emergency number (073 511 2261), local or metro police to lodge any complaints

Do not post complaints on Facebook pages as they are not monitored constantly.
