Explosives found in New Modder

No arrests were made.

The Ekurhuleni Central Police conducted an operation on April 23 to investigate illegal mining in New Modder and searched 147 people.

“The operation involved all the cluster sector commanders, dog, mounted unit, EMPD members and community patrollers,” said Ekurhuleni Central Cluster spokesman Lt Col Mack Mngomezulu.

98 shacks and eight vehicles were also searched, which resulted in the following successes:

• 57 penduka stands

• 29 metal pots

• Four metal stands

• Two oxygen bottles

• 19 metal stamping rods

• Six spades

• Two sledgehammers

• Six plastic buckets

• Two big plastic dishes

• Two wheelie bins

• One bottle of mercury

Fourteen bags of ammonium nitrate, two blasting cartridges and two plastic wrapped blasting rolls of explosives were also recovered.

“No arrests were made because none of the people searched were in possession of any of the mentioned goods,” Mngomezulu said.
