The protest will be peaceful, Saftu says.

The South African Federation of Trade Unions (Saftu) slams rumours of a violent march happening tomorrow (April 25).

Massive national strike planned for Wednesday

“The social media posts saying that people must stay indoors because the march is dangerous are false,” said Patrick Craven‚ acting spokesperson of Saftu.

Craven confirmed that the march will be a peaceful one and will pose no threat to anyone on the roads.

“Since the briefing held by the federation on Monday there have been messages circulating in different cities and on social media‚ warning people to stay indoors and not to allow their children to go to school,” he explained.

According to Craven, it is a national strike, but the march in Gauteng will happen in Johannesburg.

“We will start at 10am in New Town,” Craven said.

When asked by the City Times if the march will affect the main roads, Craven said the march will only be held in central Johannesburg and not on the highways or freeways.

“These are obviously malicious messages by people who are opposed to what we are doing,” Craven said.

“There is absolutely no reason for anyone not to leave home tomorrow or to live their normal life.

“There will be no intimidation‚ no threats. It is a voluntary decision that people have to make to join the strike.”

Craven added that on Wednesday Saftu‚ its affiliates and allies in civil society will be on the streets in a general strike in protest against the national minimum wage and amendments to the labour law.
