Smooth sailing at Kon Tiki

It was a day filled with fun.

Homestead Dam saw 53 rafts of all shapes and sizes take to the water on May 19 during South Africa’s largest annual Scouting event, Kon Tiki.

At the event, held from May 19 to 20, Scout groups from across Gauteng, as well as groups from Polokwane and Mpumalanga, gathered at Arrowe Park, in Alphen Park, for raft-building, Scout and Cub challenges.

Representing the 2nd Randburg Rangers, Aimee Timms is tying a knot.

The crews, who built their rafts on Friday, took to the water at 11am on Saturday and had to remain there for 24 hours, facing mobility challenges.

They also had to prepare a meal, for which they received extra marks if they met this year’s “Middle Earth” theme, by using solar cookers and eco-friendly ingredients.

Kega Mokoka (12), from the 10th Pretoria Arcadia is sewing a flag on the entrance of their camping tent.

Four Scout troops from Benoni entered this year’s Kon Tiki: 1st Benoni Sea Scouts, 4th Benoni Air Scouts, 6th Benoni Scouts and 9th Benoni Scouts.

Southern Wolves Scouts from Alberton, Mark de Jongh (left, 14), Schyiar van Wyk (12), Niya Madhav (12), Caitlyn van der Walt (13) and Tanika Roux (13) were crew members that will spend 24 hours on the water in their raft.
