Book club changes lives through reading
Become a volunteer and make a difference in the community.
The Daveyton Book Club continues to change lives one page at a time.
The club is looking for volunteers who can tutor mathematics, physical sciences, life sciences and accounting at least once a week at Caiphus Nyoka Secondary School.
This comes after the club recently launched a library at the school in conjunction with the school and the Rotary Club of Benoni Aurora.
Daveyton Book Club co-founder Kwandile Sikhosana said this was to ensure that we make education fashionable in rural and township schools but also allows learners to have access to information.
“The school had a 67 per cent pass rate last year and with this library, we will ensure that the results improve,” said Sikhosana.
“It is important to note that Caiphus Nyoka was a leader that fought for the rights of equality in education amongst underdeveloped communities such as Etwatwa.”
Sikhosana said they urge residents to help them create a culture of excellence at the school and in other schools across the country.
“Most of the time, we establish libraries and allow the school to render programmes or activities within them but with this library, we are going to be more hands-on as we want it to be a pilot project for many other library establishments that we will be launching in the community,” he said.
The club received a special award under the education, training and skills development category at the Premier’s Youth Excellence and Service Awards ceremony on March 10.
The Daveyton Book Club is an organisation that seeks to address illiteracy by establishing mini-libraries and book clubs for disadvantaged communities through partnerships with community developers across the country.
The organisation hosts various campaigns, from feeding the homeless and clothing street kids, to providing free basic project management training, computer skills and entrepreneurship.
Sikhosana said the club has launched its 13th book club in the country.
“We are currently working to establish a few libraries in the Northern Cape and another one at a disadvantaged school in Daveyton.
The book club is working on establishing resource centres in the Benoni area in partnership with Kids Haven.
“Kids Haven has been generous enough to offer us the space to create a resource centre, which will be the key to addressing township development during the fourth industrial revolution,” said Sikhosana.
“By next year they hope to have more than 500 book clubs across South Africa and to have started building their resource centre.”
