Another postponement for Daveyton dog fighting case

According to Bodasing, some of the dogs on the premises had scarring and cropped ears, a trademark of an animal exploited for illegal dog fighting.

The case of a suspect who appeared on 14 charges of animal cruelty at the Daveyton Magistrate’s Court on June 27 has been postponed.

“The case was heard, however, the accused’s defence attorney requested a postponement as documentation was outstanding,” said Benoni SPCA inspector Shiven Bodasing.

“We now anxiously await the next court date.”

Members of Ban Animal Trading (BAT) stood outside the court on Wednesday morning holding placards against the abuse of animals.

The case emanates from the Benoni SPCA responding to a request for assistance by the Ekhuruleni Metropolitan Police Department (EMPD) SWAT unit while they were conducting narcotics investigations in November 2017.

“EMPD SWAT found animals housed on premises and all appeared to be severely neglected by the owner,” said Bodasing.

“Cadet Inspector Chantal Keith and I immediately responded and found five dogs to be living in conditions that are in contravention of the Animals Protection Act no 71 of 1962.”

“The owner was arrested on charges of being in possession of fighting animals and housing animals in such a manner as to cause them unnecessary suffering, both of which constitute a crime in the first schedule,” Bodasing explained in a previous article.
