Member of the Mayoral Committee (MMC) for Human Settlements in Ekurhuleni councillor Lesiba Mpya launched the Wattville housing project on June 30.
The first phase of the project is estimated to cost over R130-million and is expected to create 180 job opportunities for the residents.
The building of phase one of the Harry Gwala informal settlement housing projects has begun which will consist of 264 units to be constructed during the 2018/19 financial year.
The development will consist of a four-storey walk-up unit.

City of Ekurhuleni spokesperson Themba Gadebe said phase two of the development will produce a total of 700 housing units, 113 of these being duplexes to accommodate the elderly and persons with disabilities.
“The second phase will further create about 460 job opportunities using professional services, local labour and subcontracting,” said Gadebe.
The overall projected cost of the project is R260-m.
Gadebe said with the housing project situated next to a pond, the city is planning to upgrade the area by installing social amenities, such as a community park with picnic spots and eco-gym facilities.
Wattville community leader Mandlenkosi Skhosana (82) said they have been waiting for this development for years.
“I have stayed in a shack for more than 25 years with my family and finally they will have a proper home even when I am no more,” said Skhosana.
Throughout the project a construction of a cycle and walkway route of 6 312m which will serve as a link between Wattville and Actonville.
