Cloverdene couple pushes recycling with great business idea
The resident felt sorry for recyclers and decided to help them.
From one heart to another is what motivated a Cloverdene resident to manufacture a waste trolley for recyclers to carry their items.
David Mason (74) was in the engineering field until his retirement, but his engineering skills did not retire when he saw recyclers on the road pushing broken trollies and wheelbarrows.
“I felt sorry for them. They are only trying to make a living,” Mason said.

“I had the idea about six months ago and we manufactured the first trolley three months ago.”
However, manufacturing good quality but light-weight trolleys are not cheap, so Mason decided to invite sponsors onboard.
“Businesses or individuals can buy a trolley and display their name on the side of the trolley, which is constant and visible advertising for them as the recycler they donate it to goes about their business,” he explained.
The cost of the trolley, including the wheels and customised advertising board, is about R4 000.
“We approached a company by the name of Phaphe that deals with recycling goods and they now help us to identify responsible recyclers,” Louise Mason, David’s wife, said.
“This way, when businesses approach us about who to give their sponsored trollies to, we can recommend someone.”
The Masons have six trolleys on the streets already and six in the process of being manufactured.
“The trolley is one metre by two metres big,” Louise explained.
“Our main aim is to make recyclers’ lives and the process of recycling easier.”
