EMPD Equestrian Unit welcomes new members

Congratulations to the new members of the unit.

On August 16, the EMPD Equestrian Unit welcomed three new members who underwent intensive training for six weeks.

“The three metro police officers became fully-fledged members of the EMPD Equestrian Unit following an intensive six-week basic course under the tutelage of the local service provider by the name of Pro-Equestrian based at Fairleads in Benoni,” said EMPD spokesperson Wilfred Kgasago.

“The three recruits gained their badges at the ceremony held at the EMPD Equestrian Unit main office at Petit.”

According to Kgasago, the Equestrian Unit’s advent only had five members in 2005 but has since grown over the past 13 years to 15 members.

“The Equestrian Unit forms part of the specialised units at EMPD whose duties include patrolling designated areas on horseback, enforcing laws and providing crowd control to maintain public safety,” Kgasago explained.

“They may also be involved in other duties such as search and rescue, traffic control and the pursuit of suspects.”
