Recycling plant in Actonville to be relocated

Residents are happy with the move.

After three years of complaining, Vukuzenzele Nkoza Recycling Secondary Cooperative Limited on Mayet Drive will be relocated to Daya Street.

“Residents are not against recycling but were not happy with the location of the plant,” said Ward 29 councillor Haseena Ismail.

Ismail said the relocation process should be completed by the end of October, latest November, this year.

“The recycling plant is presently situated at the middle of the sports precinct which is an eyesore.”

According to Ismail, the current location of the plant is the cause of rodent infestation, fleas and mosquitos as the recycling plant is small and the waste is sorted on the premises and also overlaps on the open field.

“Refuse lies around, sometimes unwanted waste is burned causing a safety, health and environmental risk for residents,” Ismail said.

“The recycling plant is moving to an area next to the dumping site which makes more sense as there is much more place.

“Unwanted waste can immediately be disposed of at the dump site, thus avoiding unnecessary health and environmental issues.”

The councillor said with the move, residents are more willing to recycle waste as there will be no negative environmental effects.
