Residents encouraged to report illegal RDP occupation

The accused was expected to appear in the Benoni Magistrate’s Court today (October 22).

A middle-aged woman was arrested on October 19 for fraudulently occupying an RDP house in Mokgoba Village, Etwatwa.

According to metro spokesperson Themba Gadebe, the arrest followed the formation of an Anti-Housing Corruption Task Team established by the Ekurhuleni metro mayor, Mzwandile Masina in September.

This task team has been mandated to investigate incidents of corruption by metro officials within the Human Settlements Department.

“The task team was set up after the mayor had received multiple complaints regarding corruption related to human settlements in Ekurhuleni.

“The team established the accused had produced a fraudulent death certificate in order to occupy the house of the deceased homeowner, and it then traced the rightful beneficiaries of the home to Bushbuckridge, Mpumalanga,” said Gadebe.

“The family were brought back to Ekurhuleni to submit an official affidavit to confirm they are not related to and do not know the accused.”

According to Masina, the task team is investigating more than 50 cases of fraud and corruption regarding housing.

“If you are occupying an RDP house illegally, I would advise you to vacate it now because we are coming for you.

“We will be making more arrests in the weeks to come and urge the public to continue reporting all housing fraud to the metro’s Anti-Fraud and Corruption Hotline on 0800 102 201,” Masina said.
