Emrig hosts latest swap meet in Northmead
Items range from trains and trees to towns and even buildings like social media houses head offices
The Eastern Model Railway Interest Group (Emrig) hosted a swap meet at Northmead Mall on October 27.
The purpose of a swap meet is for individuals of a similar interest to meet, buy, sell and swap model railway items.
The group began trading on a rather morbid note as one of their members and secretary of the group, Margaret Wynn, died two weeks before the meet.
According to Terrence Marx, the chairperson of the group, Wynn was the driving force behind most of the meets and her death was a huge loss to the group.
“Margaret usually handled the meets,” explained Marx.
“She played such an integral role in the group and was very passionate about what we do.
“Her death was very sudden and a massive loss to us all, especially her husband Dave.
“This swap meet is in memory of her.”

Emrig committee member Dave Wynn was a husband and co-model enthusiast to Margaret.
An emotional Dave was bestowed with the honour of opening trading after the last swap meet was opened by his late wife.
“She loved trains,” said Dave about Margaret.
“She made one recently for our grandson and wanted to keep the hobby going.
“One of the things she would often say was ‘to live in the hearts that we leave behind is not to die’ and surely she is in all of our hearts.
“I knew my wife for 50 years and her sudden death is a big loss to the Emrig community,” said a teary Dave.
Marx said the group had been present at the Northmead Mall for its fourth year and with 89 tables, filled with model trains, sets and scenery, he maintained the group offered the biggest show in Gauteng.
“It’s a good turnout and can always be better,” said Marx.
