Animals confiscated from Crystal Park residence

The SPCA will be looking into a case of animal cruelty against the owner.

On November 28 the Benoni SPCA confiscated two animals from a Crystal Park home.

According to the SPCA the animals confiscated, an African Grey parrot and a cross Maltese poodle, had been severely neglected.

“After the owner failed to respond to a notice left on his gate, we obtained a court order to have the animals removed,” said Benoni SPCA manager Vicky Finnemore.

“The bird had been left in the dark with little ventilation in the afternoon heat.”

Finnemore said that the owners failed to remove the blanket covering the bird’s cage on two occasions when the inspectors had been out.

“The cage was appalling and the bird was left without food or water.

“This leads us to believe the animal was often forgotten with no interaction, stimulation or enrichment.

“African Grey parrots are believed to have the intelligence quotient of a five year old child.

“If hunger, dehydration or disease does not kill them, stress from loneliness and boredom often does.”

Finnemore added that the bird appeared to be emaciated but that had to be confirmed by a veterinarian.

‘The cross Maltese poodle was terrible matted and covered from head to toe in ticks.

“It was surprising how such a neglected animal could still have so much spirit and affection for our inspectors when they rescued her.

“She has been treated for parasites and will have a full makeover in the morning (November 29).”
