Poor attendance for first Western Extension information session

Various issues discussed on the night included prostitution, drug dealing in the vicinity and overcrowding.

An information session for Western Extension residents held at Benoni Junior School on November 22 was poorly attended by the community.

The session was held to inform residents of the Community Police Forum’s (CPF) involvement with all relevant stakeholders as well as procedures involved in reporting of incidents.

CPF Sector Four chairperson Mary Goby provided insight on the essence of the meeting and explained the reason for the low turnout.

“We wanted a meeting to enlighten the residents of the role of the CPF as there is a major misunderstanding,” explained Goby.

“Residents think that we (CPF) are their first call if there is an issue pertaining to crime, prostitutes, accidents and the like.”

Goby stated that criminal activities need to be reported directly to SAPS and that the police will respond to these activities.

“The CPF may go past and check the situation and can cordon off the area until SAPS arrive but may not get involved.”

She added that the scourge of domestic violence is prevalent in the area and residents are under the impression that the CPF are able to resolve these issues which, she reiterated, they are unable to resolve.

“The residents do not like meetings but we put the word out and were hoping for a bigger turnout; any public meeting in a built-up area is very poorly attended.”

“This was the first ever public meeting for this sector and we are hoping to have a few more during the year.

“We are also planning days where we will be visible at street intersections or at the swimming pool.”
