Etwatwa infrastructure thieves get 15 years each

They will all serve their sentences at Modderbee Prison.

Amito Armando (48), Themba Sydney Mongayi (33), Rofino Novela (28), Rofino Novela (21), Amancio Jorge Gaumbe (21) and Saunte Atamasio Gaumbe (20) were each sentenced to 15 years in prison in the Benoni Regional Court on January 17 for theft and tampering with essential infrastructure.

Etwatwa SAPS spokesperson WO Ramothakhi Maqabe said the five men were arrested for stealing cellphone tower batteries at a Telkom exchange site in Etwatwa on May 20 last year.

“The suspects broke into one of the containers on site and stole 24 batteries worth R480 000,” said Maqabe.

“Police received a tip-off and the five were arrested on the same day.”

They will all serve their sentences at Modderbee Prison.

Etwatwa SAPS station commander Col Molatelo Maoto applauded WO Mike Buti Lekitlane for a job well done with the investigation.
