Newborn baby found on grass in the sun in Benoni North

The baby is in good health

On February 1, an officer from the Putfontein SAPS, who did not wish to be named, confirmed a newborn baby was found abandoned near a pet relocation specialist centre in Bronkhorstspruit, just outside of Benoni.

Pet Port posted a video to social media on January 31 depicting a baby being cleaned up and comforted by employees.

The caption of the post read:

“This beautiful, healthy baby boy was found abandoned on the grass in the sun across the road from our offices.

“He is not even an hour old and the umbilical cord and placenta still attached.

“We named him Baby Siphamandla, which means little warrior.”

The post went on to state the baby was collected by paramedics and taken to a nearby hospital to be checked up.

“We will be visiting him and tracking his progress,” the post continued.

“SAPS are aware of the situation and we now await a case number.”

The City Times contacted branch manager of the facility Justine Murray for further comment.

“The incident was reported to the Putfontein SAPS, but we are still awaiting a case number,” said Murray.

“We have been to the hospital to visit Baby Siphamandla and have gotten a social worker involved.

“From what we could tell the baby is in good health.

“He is eating and sleeping well and he did not need oxygen when he arrived at the hospital.

“We were initially very distressed when we found him.

“The matter is quite sad as his mother abandoned him.

“We are grateful to have found him and we will cooperate as much as possible with the social worker to find a positive outcome to this situation.”
