Twenty-five firefighters from fire stations across the Ekurhuleni metro recently became the first group of technical rescuers in Africa.
District manager and media liaison for Ekurhuleni Disaster and Emergency Management Services William Ntladi said all learners had to comply to the IFSAC standards, which include a medical fitness certificate and a physical fitness level which includes an endurance obstacle course.
“They were each successful in all 17 technical rescue modules – mainly rope, confined spaces, structural collapses, trench, swift water, vehicle, machinery and technical rescue modules.

“The skills development programme included day-to-day rescues, effective and efficient vehicle rescues and assisting in minimising the loss of life and damages to property in the shortest possible amount of time.”
Ntladi added the aim is to sustain the training until every firefighter with the metro qualifies as a technical rescuer.
Another batch of firefighters is already in training and the academy aims to train and qualify a further 24 firefighters as technical rescuers by the end of the year.
