Western Extension loses popular watering hole
It was previously established that businesses and homes in Western Extension were plagued by social ills, such as vagrants, drugs and prostitution.
Grapes Pub and Restaurant, which was located in Russel Street, Western Extension, for 24 years relocated to the Benoni Lakes Club, Lakefield, on February 22.
Owner of the landmark restaurant for close on five years Julie Venner said the move was predominantly owed to new business opportunities, but the question of safety and security for patrons in the old location in Western Extension also played a role in the relocation.

In October 2018, the City Times met with the Western Extension Business Association (WEBA) which expressed its regret regarding vagrants and overall safety in the area.
Venner said since October the issues facing the community escalated.
“A few weeks ago my domestic worker was ambushed by thugs in the area while she was on her way to work.
“Luckily she wasn’t harmed, but they did rob her and she was petrified to come to work after that.
“We had to send her for counselling.
“Overall, we did not feel safe in the area any longer.”
By January, Venner said the option to move was becoming mandatory as the social ills increased significantly.
The business shut its doors in Western Extension on February 15.
“It’s a new era for Grapes and I would like to thank our patrons, old and new, as Grapes would not be what it is without all of them.”
Deborah dos Reis, president of WEBA, said Grapes was considered one of the main hubs of activity in Western Extension.
“The area just wasn’t safe or secure enough, unfortunately,” said dos Reis.
“We have some beautiful restaurants in Western Extension, but safety is our biggest concern as vagrants and prostitutes account for some of the biggest loss of income.”
