Flying squad recovers cash box from Daveyton Mall robbery

Police are appealing for information that could lead to the arrest of the suspects.

A cash box which was stolen while a cash-in-transit security guard was collecting money from a store in Daveyton Mall on March 3 was recently recovered by Benoni Flying Squad (BFS) officers.

Spokesperson WO Grant Giblin explained that on the same day, at around 9.30am, officers were driving in Hlakwane Street, Daveyton, when they came across five men carrying pistols and a rifle.

“They shot at officers, who returned fire,” he said.

“One of our officers suffered a flesh wound when his vehicle was hit by several bullets.

“He was later treated at a local clinic before being transported to hospital.

“While fleeing the scene, with officers in pursuit, the suspects dropped a cash box.

“The suspects managed to flee and investigations determined it was the cash box stolen from the security guard at Daveyton Mall.

“It was reported too that the driver of the cash van and the security guards were also robbed of their firearms that day,” Giblin said.

Any information can be reported to the nearest police station or by calling 10111.

In a separate incident also on March 3, officers arrested two suspects for assault with the intent to cause grievous bodily harm (GBH).

“At around 2.30am that day, officers on patrol were stopped by community members in Vivian Street, Chris Hani informal settlement, and asked to intervene to prevent two men from beating up a woman,” said Giblin.

“While assisting, the two men attacked the police officers and tried to take their firearms.”

Giblin said during the ensuing scuffle, one suspect was shot in the arm and the other in the leg.

“An officer sustained injuries to his hand, back and head.

“The two suspects were arrested and taken to hospital under police guard.”
