The iThemba Rape and Trauma Support Centre, which is an NGO based in Benoni, is appealing to the public for school shoe donations during the month of May, which is also child protection month.

According to iThemba stakeholder Nombuso Masondo, the centre has eight satellite offices which are based at police stations around Ekurhuleni and are called Victim Empowerment Centre (VEC).

Currently, the Putfontein VEC is collecting school shoes for learners at Umnyezane Primary School.

“The month of May is child protection month in South Africa, therefore as the VEC we would like to visit Umnyezane on May 27 to educate the learners about child protection and also donate the school shoes,” explained Masondo.

“Forty per cent of the learners at Umnyezane are orphans while most are from informal settlements and their parents are unemployed.

“We would appreciate the public’s assistance in donating school shoes from sizes one to six, new or old but still usable.”
