A 31-year-old man was arrested on May 14 following a house robbery in Farrarmere.
Benoni SAPS spokesperson Capt Nomsa Sekele said an 80-year-old woman was busy in her garden when she saw the suspect jumping over the fence and approaching her.
“He then demanded food and the elderly woman told him she didn’t have any food,” said Sekele.

“The man became aggressive and grabbed the woman by her neck and pulled her inside the house, threatening her with a bottle.”
Sekele said that once inside the house, the suspect demanded car keys and the victim told him she could not remember where she put them.
“He then grabbed the woman’s cellphone, garage remote and house remote.
“The woman got a chance to press the panic button. The robber fled the scene by jumping the fence again,” she said.
Sekele said a security company responded immediately and within minutes the suspect was apprehended and found in possession of the woman’s valuables.
A case of house robbery was opened at the Benoni Police Station and the man was detained.
The spokesperson said preliminary investigations revealed that the suspect was wanted for a pending case of drug possession.
“Further investigations will be conducted to check if the suspect can be linked to other cases,” said Sekele.
Station commander Brig Ntakuseni Lukhwareni condemned the attack on elderly people by youngsters.
He thanked and encouraged the security officers to help the police in the correct manner where possible.
