Horticultural Society monthly meeting held

The Horticultural Society started before 1950 and are one of the few societies in the East of Gauteng that are still running.

Horticultural Society hosted their monthly meeting on June 15 in Fairleads.

Stephen Rehbock, chairperson of the society, said the topic of the day was herbaceous borders.

He started off by giving a brief history of these soft-stem plants.

He mentioned that soft-stem plants started in England during the Victorian era, they form of a flowerbed where you use perennials that flower for long periods of time.

Perennials are fast-growing plants that require regular feeding, organic material is best or general purpose fertilizer every six months to make a herbaceous border more effective, a fast-growing shrub like hebe and plants like agapanthus as they are low-growing ground covers and could be grown among taller perennials will give you a sense of depth in your design, diverse plants can be added to create an interesting design.

These plants are water-wise and are cost-effective to grow and you can always ask your neighbour if they have some to allow you to dig.

There are about 30 keen gardeners in the group and they invite anyone who is interested in learning about plants to come for a meeting, which is held on the third Saturday of every month.

Garden care in winter tips by Stephen:

• Most important is to sit back and enjoy your garden, but have a programme for summer to obtain an attractive garden.

• Start with a compost heap with all the leaves and plant materials, add an activator to add nutrients which could be put back into the ground.

• Water and feed plants when needed, but do not over-water them.

• Cut back shrubs and trees when they get out of hand.

• Deep dig the beds and add organic materials, preparing them for summer.
