• The Baby Almond Tree, which is a registered NPO and temporary place of safety for abandoned, abused and vulnerable babies and children between the ages of birth and three years old, is in need of baby necessities.

After seeing how adversely HIV/Aids, poverty and substance abuse affects the children of South Africa, Charmaine and Kent McQueen opened The Almond Tree, which started in their own home.

According to the home’s development manager Zina Rotherham, the most pressing need is for nappies and baby wipes.

“Supporting us in this way is a great 67 Minutes for Mandela Day initiative for community members to do,” she said.

• The need for The Salvation Army’s soup kitchen, which takes place every day, and their weekly feeding of the homeless on the streets of Benoni, has increased tremendously, mostly due to the cold. The school holiday has also seen a lot of children arriving in need of food and the organisation is at capacity with housing the homeless. Maj Jeffrey Stafford said they provide over 3 000 meals a week to the needy. Donations needed: Soup ingredients, mainly vegetables and soup bones, bread/bread rolls, non-perishable and perishable foods, soya products, spreads for bread and toiletries.
