Keeping up with council

Residents who are meant to receive title deeds need to follow the processes below and wait for finalisation before they can receive title deeds

Council housing regulated

The Ekurhuleni metro is implementing the Regularisation and Transfer of Ownership (RETRO), a programme initiated by the Gauteng Department of Local Government and Housing, which is aimed at regulating the occupancy of metro-owned residential stock. The programme is based on the National Enhanced Discounted Benefit Scheme Programme, which is aimed at transferring public housing stock to qualifying beneficiaries. The implementation of the programme in Ekurhuleni will take place in two phases:

• Phase one: Transfer of freestanding units.

• Phase two: Transfer of council-owned flats to qualifying occupants.

Farrarmere Gardens is one such public housing stock owned by the metro. Residents who are meant to receive title deeds need to follow the processes below and wait for finalisation before they can receive title deeds.

1) Claim of the property by the claimants through the RETRO programme.

2) The implementation and completion for outstanding work that is still required to enable the registration of the subdivided stands to be registered at the deeds office.

3) The finalisation, registration and transfer of the properties into the names of the occupants through the RETRO programme.

4) The handing over of beneficiaries to the finance department for registration of service accounts on the finance system.

5) The issuing of the title deeds.
