BFS warns public to remain vigilant at all times

“You have to train your brain to become aware of your surroundings at all times.”

Benoni Flying Squad (BFS) communications officer WO Grant Giblin said the squad is urging members of the public to always be aware of their surroundings to avoid becoming a victim of hijacking.

Over the weekend of August 2 to 4, Giblin confirmed BFS recovered five abandoned motor vehicles, which included a red Hyundai i20 in Etwatwa Extension 19 reported hijacked in the same area.

“Constantly be on the lookout,” he said.

“You have to train your brain to become aware of your surroundings at all times.

“Criminals generally target drivers who are alone in a vehicle and wait until they reach their destination before they attempt a hijacking.

“Once you have reached your destination, they will find a way to block you off from gaining access to the road to drive off.

“Be observant and if you feel you are being followed, before driving into your destination, drive around the block to see if you are being followed by a vehicle.

“If you are being followed call for help immediately or drive to your nearest police station.

“Often we are distracted with thoughts about life, like household duties or our children and work, and this can cause a loss of concentration when driving.

“It is advisable that when driving, and especially when approaching your destination, that you remain vigilant.

“Turn down the radio and make sure your cellphone is put away so there are minimal distractions.

“When this happens you become more alert of your surroundings and will be able to determine if you are being followed or not.

“We also advise that a driver add a tracking device to their vehicle.”
