A suspect was fatally wounded by a Benoni Crime Prevention officer yesterday (September 11) following a tip off that two men were in possession of a firearm near the N12.
The suspect was shot after pointing a firearm at the crime prevention officer.
“At about 11.30am Benoni Crime Prevention officers were on their daily patrol duties around the N12 freeway,” said Benoni SAPS spokesperson Capt Nomsa Sekele.
“They received information about two suspects who crossed the freeway, one of whom was in possession of a firearm.

“The officers followed up on the information and went to investigate.
“The suspects were spotted in the bushes next to Danie Taljaard Park.”
According to Sekele, the officers applied their tactics after the suspects tried to corner one of them and pointed a firearm at them.
“The officer acted accordingly and shot the suspect who pointed the firearm at him, in the upper body,” she said.
“The second suspect disappeared and evaded arrest.
“Paramedics were summoned and certified the suspect dead on the scene and the firearm was seized.
“Further investigations revealed the firearm was taken from the lawful owner during a robbery that took place on July 23 in Snake Road not far from where the incident happened.”
