Remembrance Service held at the Moth Reveille Shellhole

The wreath-laying ceremony commenced with Officer Commanding Regiment Oos-Rand, Regiment Oos-Transvaal, South African Police, ex-servicemen, voluntary organisations, next of kin and the general public.

The MOTH and organisations for ex-servicemen hosted the 101 annual Remembrance Day service on November 10 at the Moth Reveille Shellhole.

Military, fire and emergency services, former servicemen, voluntary organisations and the public came together to commemorate Remembrance Day, which is marked worldwide on November 11 or on the Sunday closest to the date, in remembrance of all who died in the service of their countries.

Proceedings began with the national flag being hoisted before the commencement of the parade of four former servicemen marching to the cenotaph to take up positions with their flags.

Other guests participated in a parade to the sounds of Benoni High School pipe band.

A scripture reading, prayer and address were conducted and two minutes of silence was requested – the first minute was for the servicemen who went to fight and never came home and the other for servicemen who came home from war.

George Smith, a member of MOTH for 40 years, laid a wreath for Korean veterans.

In the final proceedings, guards were called to attention for the singing of the national anthem.
