After a successful 2019, Kids Haven looks forward to celebrating their 28th birthday this year and launch their new website.
“It is 28 years of protecting and caring for vulnerable children from the communities in and around Benoni,” said Susan Daly, who is part of the fund-raising team.

“In 2019, Kids Haven looked after 218 children from January to December, taking in 73 new admissions and saying goodbye to 62 children and youth who left Kids Haven to return to their families or communities.
“In any one month, Kids Haven had at least 155 ‘heads on beds’ in our centre and group homes.”
Kids Haven is also delighted that all five of their matriculants passed their exams and learners have all enjoyed good productive years in university and college.
“One of our ‘longest’ resident children is starting her honours degree at the University of Pretoria after successfully completing her undergraduate studies at Rhodes in 2019.
“We also celebrated sending 26 children back into formal school this term.
“All 26 of these children successfully completed the requirements of the Kids Haven Bridging School programme in 2019 ,which helps to get ‘out-of-school’ children back into formal school. We are proud of everyone.”
Daly said the home could not have provided care and protection to these children and youth without the help of the Benoni community.
“We are very grateful for every donation of second-hand clothing and every food parcel that we received.
“It has also been wonderful to receive the help of our silver volunteers from Eddy House every week along with other local volunteers who assist with our homework programme in the afternoons.”
The shelter still remains in need of adult volunteers who can commit to a term of homework support, once a week in an afternoon; and to school going volunteers who can earn community hours through making macaroni cheese or cheese muffins for the children.

“You are also welcome to pop into our charity shops at the centre in Cranbourne Avenue or at Tait House at 140 Woburn Avenue, Benoni.
“You may find that book you were looking for or another treasure to buy while raising funds to care for children.”
They are also in need of the following: school stationery – especially blue pens, glue sticks and A4 copier paper required by many of the children’s schools, ingredients to bolster the weekly soup kitchen, including beans, tinned tomatoes, tea and long life milk; and any kind of second-hand donation from clothing to books and toys or household goods.

“We can also collect donations.”
“We are almost ready to launch our new website and will be sharing details via social media.”
