The Ekurhuleni metro partnered with the taxi industry, Outsurance and the Church of Scientology to disinfect 25 taxi ranks across the metro.
The event was attended by the metro’s MMC for Transport Planning Phelisa Nkunjana and Gauteng MEC for Transport Jacob MamaboloNkunjana called on all stakeholders of the industry to adhere to the lockdown level four regulations.

The metro?s spokesperson Themba Gadebe said an estimated 1.5-million employees returned to work on May 4 due to relaxation of restrictions from level five to level four, and majority of commuters use taxis to get to work.
“This makes the taxi industry an area where possible spread of the virus may happen if adequate measures are not taken”.
Spelling out what the campaign seeks to achieve, Nkunjana said, “Clean and disinfect all the vehicles before passengers get in it.
“Sanitise the hands of all the passengers before they board and all passengers must wear masks before they are allowed into the taxis.
” She added that social distancing should be maintained while in the taxi.
“We all have to stick to a 70 per cent load in taxis or buses.”
