Drury Lane house fire leaves no one injured
William Ntladi said that the cause of the fire is undetermined and still a subject of investigations.
The Benoni Central Fire Station received a call on May 17 about a fire at 6 Drury Lane around midnight.
“Crews swiftly responded to the scene to render firefighting services augmented by Brakpan, Boksburg and Etwatwa firefighters,” said William Ntladi, district manager media liaison at Disaster and Emergency Management Services (DEMS).
“The first arriving major pumper on scene found flames and dense smoke already protruding through the roof of a 10-roomed house.

“Offensive fire attack was immediately initiated by using as attack line from the tank prior arrival of other resources. For water sustainability, secondary pump crews relayed water from the nearby fire hydrant to the main pump.”
Ntladi added that on arrival of the other two water tankers from Boksburg and Etwatwa fire stations, three more attack lanes were established and the fire was contained and extinguished without any further damage to the structure.
Crews managed to salvage 9 and 19kg LPG cylinders from inside the house, a microwave oven and a power generator, among other items.
“No casualties were recorded on scene as all five occupants and those in the backyard rooms managed to escape, including the pets.
“Eight rooms, inclusive of the bathroom and toilet, were destroyed, four others saved.
“There was intense damage in the dining room and lounge, spreading to the entire structure.”

A neighbour said: “We woke up to the house behind us ablaze. One fire engine arrived and by 12.45am, part of the roof started to collapse. It appeared as if the firefighters were struggling with water.
“At 1.15am, a large shrub on the boundary caught fire, endangering buildings on adjacent properties.
“The occupants of these properties used their hosepipes to put out the shrub and cool down the roof of the structures on their properties.
“By 1.45am, the kitchen was still engulfed in flames. By 2.20am the fire was under control and the damping down of the hot spots started.”
