The Benoni police are warning social media users to be alert and not to fall victim to extortion.
This comes after a case of extortion was opened at the station on July 12 when a man who shared nude photographs with a woman on Facebook was blackmailed for money.

Benoni SAPS spokesperson Capt Nomsa Sekele said the victim alleged he was chatting with the woman on social media and she sent him nude photographs of herself.
“She then asked him to send nude photographs of himself and he did,” said Sekele. “Later that day, the woman called the man and demanded R10 000. When he said he didn’t have the money the woman threatened to share his nude photos on social media. The man told the woman he only had R1 000 and the woman said he must send it to her via an e-wallet.
The spokesperson also warned that there are people who are calling residents to inform them there has been a case opened against them and they demand money to make the case “disappear”.
“If you receive such a phone call, contact the police to verify this information. The police will never ask for money to assist you with a case,” Sekele said.
Anyone who may have fallen victim to any of these scams should contact the Benoni SAPS on 011 747 0077, Crime Stop on 08600 10111 or use the MYSAPS app.
