Light ahead for former Marikana dwellers

MMC for Human Settlements Lesiba Mpya said the re-blocking programme has provided undisputed evidence that it improves people’s lives, especially concerning a decrease in shack fires and access to essential services.

Residents who recently relocated to Putfontein from Glen Marikana will soon have electricity.

This is according to Ekurhuleni metro spokesperson Themba Gadebe.

“The electrification designs for the area have now been concluded and three contractors were appointed to install electricity. The contractors were introduced to the ward councillor and community leaders on September 16.”

Gadebe said that since the current administration took up office in 2016, 34 informal settlements have been re-blocked and electrified, resulting in almost 50 000 people having access to electricity.

“An additional 6 546 informal settlement households under the Eskom licensed areas also received electricity.

“Many informal settlements have been added to the electrification programme and by the end of this year, a total of 22 000 homes will be connected, bringing the total number of households connected to the grid since 2000 to 93 000,” he said.

MMC for Human Settlements Lesiba Mpya said the re-blocking programme has provided undisputed evidence that it improves people’s lives, especially concerning a decrease in shack fires and access to essential services.

“We will continue to work tirelessly on accelerating its implementation,” he said.
